How I made a pop song in a week with ZERO musical talent and less than $150

Pop Music is Fun

I love to write. In fact, I’ve written at least one page a day for the last 2,078 days. This week, however, I took a vacation from research, and I still had the urge to write.

So, I decided to write a song.

This song-writing urge was partly inspired by Jeff Tweedy and his book, “How to write one song. ($15)” His main point is that doing creative things, and producing art is good for the spirit, even if we’re bad at it.

So, I decided it was ok to write a bad song.

First, I went to beatstars.com and looked for a simple beat that I liked. I spend a lot of time on this website, because I like to write with background music on, and lyrics make it hard for me to pay attention to my own words. I found this beautiful song by a producer in Croatia, heydium. He calls this track “Ghosted.” And I’ve always been a sucker for the Ukulele.

I bought a license for the beat ($30).
